Trigger

You received an email from your healthcare provider's billing team with the subject "Statement of Account" or similar, showing a balance and a "Pay Balance Online" button.

Outcome

Your balance is paid via credit card or bank transfer through Stripe's secure checkout. You receive a receipt. The practice's billing team is notified.

Where

  • Your email inbox → the statement email
  • The "Pay Balance Online" link → opens /pay/<secure-token> in your browser
  • Stripe Checkout (a payment page hosted by Stripe)

Steps

  1. Open the email. It comes from the practice's billing service (your practice's name, possibly co-branded). The email includes:
    • Your name + balance details
    • A summary: total charges, what insurance paid, what you owe
    • A blue or branded "Pay Balance Online" button
  2. Verify the email is legitimate. Look for:
    • Sender domain matches your practice's billing service.
    • Your specific name + visit dates — not generic "Dear Patient."
    • No urgent demands for payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto (those are scams).
  3. Click "Pay Balance Online." Lands you on a secure payment page hosted by your provider on app.credentik.com/v2/#/pay/<token>.
  4. Confirm the amount and details. The page shows the same balance from the email. If it doesn't match, STOP — call the practice's billing number on your statement.
  5. Click "Continue to Stripe Checkout." You're redirected to checkout.stripe.com (browser address bar should show that URL).
  6. Enter payment details. Credit card, debit card, or bank account. Stripe handles all the security.
  7. Submit payment. Confirmation screen confirms success.
  8. Check email for receipt — Stripe sends one immediately. Save it for your records.

Watch-outs

  • The link expires. Pay links are typically valid for 24 hours from when the practice sent them. If you wait too long, you'll see "expired" — call the practice and ask for a new one.
  • The payment goes to the practice, not the billing service. Even though the email may have the agency's branding, Stripe sends the money to the medical practice's bank account.
  • You're not entering credit card info on the practice's website. Stripe.com handles all the card data — the practice never sees your card number. That's a security feature, not a bug.
  • Don't trust links from emails that look "off." If the URL doesn't go to app.credentik.com (or your practice's known domain), don't click. Call the practice using the number on your insurance card or a prior statement to verify.
  • If you have insurance and don't believe you owe this, don't pay first — call the practice. Sometimes insurance adjudication is delayed and a balance is sent prematurely. Paying then disputing is harder than disputing first.
  • Save the receipt. You'll need it for tax purposes (HSA/FSA reimbursement) and for any later dispute.
